Praise the sun!
Mar. 21st, 2014 12:25 pmI have a new gaming obsession, I finally started playing Dark Souls after picking it up for four quid in a sale last year. It's a third-person action RPG, similar sort of thing to Fable or Kingdom's Of Amalur. Only this one is very different in feel. You're only given the vaguest idea of where you're going and what you're meant to do when you get there. A hell of a lot of stuff isn't explained to you, so wasting an important item is very easy. The world design is kind of linear, but not really, with lots of shortcuts back and forward.
It's the combat though that makes this game what it is. There are many Japanese games that just plonk you down and say "Deal with it." This is one of those games. Button mashing will get you killed. Not paying attention will get you killed. Running away will not always work. You may think you're safe, may indeed utter the words "They'll never get us here." just before finding out that yes, yes they can.
It reminds me a lot of Monster Hunter in ways, in that yes you can get better equipment and stuff, but the way to defeat the game is simply by getting better at playing the game. I'd been put off the game because of everyone saying how difficult it was, it is difficult, but it's a rewarding difficulty, in that you usually know in your head that you could have done that bit better.
The vagueness can be annoying, I was doing a corpse run through an annoying area for a while because I had missed a bonfire (save/spawn point) but now I've found it, the surrounding area became that little bit easier to deal with.
There's also the fun online aspect, where you can leave messages to help/hinder other players. You can touch bloodstains to see how other players died in that area. It goes as far as being able to summon other players into your game to help you.
Praise the sun, oh yes, praise the sun.
