Switching over.
Jun. 20th, 2013 05:22 pmThis has kind of happened before, when I finally got round to buying a DVD player back in 2000/2001 when I finally got round to buying a DVD player. Well, a Playstation 2 actually, but I digress. Part of the joy of this was replacing old VHS retail tapes and stuff taped off the telly with much better DVDs.
I know my first DVD purchase was a five for £40 offer or something at Blockbuster. I forget exactly what was bought, but John Carpenter's The Thing and Jaws were certainly among them. The Thing had an excellent commentary track and a fantastic making of documentary that kind of set my expectations high for future DVD extras. My collection grew and grew, at a rough guess I've maybe 400 DVDs altogether, likely more.
And now I'm finally making the switchover to Blu-Ray. I have held off for a long time, but a friend loaned me his spare player and a few choice discs and I was almost instantly sold. Some deals and trade ins later and I've started my own collection.
Naturally, John Carpenter's The Thing is one of them.

I think that's a pretty good start and I've got Blade Runner and The Fifth Element on the way because I got a friend to trade in some stuff for me. I've a list of half-a-dozen other movies i plan on picking up in the next few months and The Hobbit may be the last big film I buy on DVD. (In fact, had my friend been in touch a day earlier, i would have shelled out three more quid for the blu-ray :P )
Onward, to adventure!
